From a young age, many girls are taught to be wary of certain situations, to avoid being alone with men, or to be hyper-aware of their surroundings when walking at night. The media, news stories, personal anecdotes, and even well-meaning advice from parents or friends reinforce the idea that women need to constantly protect themselves from potential harm—whether it’s from men who could be dangerous, abusive, or exploitative.
